The Breakfast Edit
Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day
Let's talk about why breakfast is so important. There are a few reasons, one of them being that breakfast sets us up for how our blood sugar will be regulated throughout the day. Having well regulated blood sugar is important for a lot of things, such as managing cortisol levels in your body as well as helping you eat healthy throughout the day (instead of reaching for sugar) and keeping your energy levels up.
Here are guidelines nutritionists recommend:
1. Start your day with at least 30g of protein. This not only gives you a head start on your protein needs for the day, it also helps keep that blood sugar regulated.
2. Eat within 60 minutes of waking. My goal is to fast for 12 hours and then eat within 60 minutes of waking. The fast is to give the digestive system a break, and I notice a difference in how I feel if I go beyond 60 minutes without eating in the morning.
3. To elaborate on the first point, focus on protein, healthy fats, and fiber in the morning to keep you satiated and your blood sugar regulated.
4. Don't drink caffeine until after breakfast! Ideally no caffeine at all as it spikes cortisol, but waiting until you've eaten helps lessen the spike. I do this with sugar too - I eat something sweet only after I've had something protein rich.
Try these out and see how you feel! It's made a huge difference in my own health.
